SCUB is a football for development program working with children at-risk in the community (favela) of Complexo da Penha, one of Rio de Janeiro’s most dangerous neighborhoods. In 2015 SCUB was formed, partnering with GM Chevrolet to build an all-purpose soccer field, the field was opened by Arsenal Invincible and World Cup winner Gilberto Silva. The program offers safe play and personal development for children at-risk. The program is situated on the hill of Caracol - a community where the streets are not safe to play because of the ‘war’ between drug traffickers and the authorities. SCUB offers engagement on the field and opportunities off the field to keep the children safe and help them reach their full potential.
The program also offers the children opportunities for excursions and opportunities outside the community building a bridge to wider society and indeed the world. In 2018 nine girls from the program were selected to represent Brazil at the Street Child World Cup in Moscow, Russia. The girls won the competition.
Up to 300 local children have access to SCUB on a weekly basis with an average of 80 children participating per week and up to 1500 are involved throughout the year. There are an equal number of girls to boys. Participation supports each child in their personal development, and provides an escape from the risk of violence, abuse and exploitation and developing vital skills beneficial to everyday life, education and the workplace. Through football activities and team building, the program specifically addresses issues of conflict resolution and gender equity as identified as key pillars by the coaches.
SCUB are building their football for development methodology in partnership with The Sports Creative.
